Heading Out to See the States
Oh, who am I kidding? I need to get out of the house.
Long story …….
I started riding in 2022 after contracting COVID. Despite little children and octogenarians passing me relentlessly, I put 373 miles (600 km) on my bike that fall. I could not believe the results. I could breathe again. Even my asthma seemed so much better.
In 2023, I rode over 1,046 miles (1683.374 km). My cardiologist informed me that I had completely shrunk the aneurysm on the top of my heart, reduced the size of my lower aorta, and lowered my blood pressure. He then told me never to stop riding. In addition to that great news, I did not need insulin that entire summer.
While pedaling my sore bottom all over New York for the last two years, I watched many videos about biking. That is when I learned about bicycling touring. My heart pined to get out there. So, the dreaming began. I had no date in mind, but I couldn’t stop thinking about riding my bike across America.
In 2024, some unexpected realities dropped into my lap, and the dreaming intensified. Then, it dawned on me. JUST GO!
After some thinking and jotting down some ideas, I came up with a date. And that date seemed to align with the heavens suddenly opening up on me (a torrent of lemons). Basically, life has created an opportunity that I can’t pass at this time (I’m thinking positively here).
On or about April 4, 2025, I am heading off to cycle America for the next two to three years. I would love to do all 50 states. But time will tell.
Will I be able to do it? Who knows. But I’m counting the days and can’t wait to get out there and ride.
